THE SO WHAT

Recruit advisors who can ask tough questions and push you outside of your comfort zone. Subordinates are often trying to impress you, and it is the rare one who will push back on your ideas. Outside confidants will tell you the way things are, not the way you want them to be. This is a critical perspective. Cultivate advisors—and staff—who are strong minded and confident enough to challenge your thinking.

I felt comfortable sharing with Don all my ideas as well as key information on new products in development. This was a breach in protocol. In the past, product information was very closely held. But I received support from Mike Fukuda—and eventually Mr. Iwata—that in order to create effective plans and messaging, I needed to share information early with a limited number of key people. And Don Varyu was on that list.
